Early days

An ABC online news item refers to Nicola Roxon as the “Minister for the Ageing” in Our New Rudd Government.

In fact, according to a list published yesterday, Ms Roxon is the senior Minister for the Health and Ageing portfolio. The junior Minister for Ageing is Justine Elliot.

Oh well, it’s early days yet, so we might expect the media to eventually get these things right.

The news item goes on to report Retirement Village Association chief executive Kate Hamond’s call for the Rudd Government to appoint an “Ambassador for Ageing”.

That’s a nice warm’n’fuzzy idea, but one would hope and expect that a minister of the crown, whose specific responsibility is to the ageing, should be able to fulfill that function. Yet another government appointee will only blur the lines of accountability.

What's that?

"Pedantic"?

Okay, fair cop...

Ooh, no, not pedantic. It seems to be that our MSM has lost the plot entirely since the Rudd Rapture.

Turnbull was described in today's Age as being the Lib's newly appointed "spokespersons" on Treasury.

It would seem that shadow ministries have been unilaterally abolished by Australian journalism.

... should have been "spokesperson", singular, not plural ...

Ah well, give them a little time. I mean, yes the media, but also the Opposition, who are as yet in disarray, to put it mildly. What Oz certainly needs now is a halfway decent opposition.

Can't say that I've given any thought to who the Libs would hand out shadow portfolios to ... not many well known names left ... but I think Turnbull could have the makings of an excellent shadow minister for Treasury. Quite likely a much more suitable role for him than leader. Alas, he will probably boot it about to try to make it a stepping stone to grab the leadership off Nelson at some point.

Pity, he could do far better, for himself, and for our democracy, by accepting a role better suited to him and focusing on excelling at it.

We'll see. I could be quite wrong. Turnbull can also be a big duffa.
