Here's hoping you get to drink it in not a maudlin manner.

I've a decent WA (Margaret River) red , black beer, Budweiser (I was full-on planing the OS trip this time last year) and even some dry alcoholic cider.

A veritable alcoholic smorgasboard.

Perhaps the Lady Rector will indulge in a "Cidie" or two.

Either way, tonight will be blood sport of the best kind. Should the government be heading to history's recycling bin, the looks on the faces of Costello, Downer and Minchin will be worth the watching.

It should be a pageant, both sublime and grotesque, whatever happens.

We're readying to spend the night down country with friends, so may not be able get online again til tomorrow.

So whatever happens, hope you and the family enjoy the evening.

That goes for other, um, Hermeneuticians (yikes!) and 'Briefers, particularly Caz and Kath.

Ahhhhh....just woke up, having a stretch and a glass of OJ.

Not quite '98 vintage but anything else this early is a bit unbecoming, isn't it?

Sky News is live online, BTW, here. Exit poll coming up in about half an hour...

It's already over.

Start drinking.

Hermeneuticians?

Yikes, indeed!

And that would be Brieflets.

*Sniff*

I'm well into the Margaret River red.

Opened it once the ALP's "national" vote hit 52.7%

The polls were, indeed, correct: Howard's end.

And you were right about a blood bath Mike!
Hope you enjoyed the bubbly Jarcob?

Wonderful blood sport.

I know he's the outgoing PM and all but, the continued deference shown to the matter of postal votes et al was becoming nauseating.

By night's end, Anthony Green was vaiantly trying to declare his seat lost amid the "at least 1% buffer" McKew would need to hold against the postals.

What piffle. Were it anyone else's seat it will have been coloured red without a hiccup.

The AEC, at close of counting, have the swing to McKew at 5.97% She required 4.1%

How many Bennelong votes recorded postal votes again?

I thought Brieflets was the Princess. Perhaps Briefings... um...

The bubbly was indeed very nice, with due thanks to Mr Howard.

It was preceded by a fine spread at 'Syb's Place' in Loch, after which we repaired to our hosts' home to observe the televised bloodbath.

Just to be sure, I delayed cracking The Bottle until 10pm, as all of us still couldn't believe that the polls had been right all along.

Upon which an ordinary bottle of Great Western brut underwent some kind of transubstantiation to become a tart nectar of the gods (or demigods, at least).

Certainly a strange but wonderful evening...
