Doing Kevin’s job

The Australian today gushes Employees rush to sign AWAs. Perhaps that headline might alternatively have read:

“Employers rush to impose AWAs”

Or some other permutation.

Well at any rate, the direction of the spin leaves no doubt that the newspaper is doing Kevin Andrews’ job of selling these IR ‘reforms’ for him. That, at least, is good news for Andrews, as he seems to be doing such a poor job of it himself.

Yes, it can hardly be said that employees are rushing to sign up for AWAs. I was interested to read recently that News has the largest number of AWAs in Australia and is keen to provide the cheer squad. Seems that there is a large conflict of interest. I believe that there are multiple tiers of AWA. I have one, which I find to be reasonable. It is the lower end of the pay scale that I believe that their should be moral outrage about the potential abuse of AWA. Reducing already limited rights, benefits and wages for vulnerable employees does not seem fair.
