The footage Johnson Outboards didn't want you to see...

What movie is that from, Mike?

Buggered if I know. Mirrors, a good mate, sent it to me over a year ago.

That footage is probably why Johnson have ceased to exist as a brand - at least in Australia.

Quite well done eh?

On other things, you really should let it go over t'other side (though I had to throw in the "refusniks"). Its a bit like arguing with a looped tape...

Father Park, I kind of recognise the rudely-awakened guy in the boat as an actor of some distinction; though obviously not of sufficient distinction that I actually recognise who he is.

Anyway, if it is from a movie, then seems likely someone connected with Evinrude had some sway over financing.

And fear not, I don't take anything much over t'other side very seriously at all. A mere occasional diversion, and gives our friend something perhaps over which to animate himself.

Oh yeah, the refuseniks... A whole lotta refusin' goin' on, a'goin' on, a'goin' on.

And not just refusing, but organised refusing.

It's beyond some, apparently, to ask why there's such a level of organised refusery amongst serving military personnel of one's nominal utopia. If such was the case among serving US personnel, there'd likely be some questions asked on the Hill.

Hey anyway, thanks again for another splendid fishy offering, Mike. Best wishes to you and the family...

I think that footage is from the movie "Always" (Spielberg) Jarcob.

Thanks Kath, I'm sure you must be right, it's a very Spielbergy sequence.

And you reckon there hasn't been the odd word or two spilt in the Knesset?

What is it with you guys? When you've lost an argument why is it impossible for you to just concede the point, admit that you've learnt something new and move on to something hopefully approaching a half way decent discussion on the subject? Instead of just getting abusive and cheap. Very cheap. Why is it impossible for you to make the slightest acknowledgment that the dissent in Israel, including even in its military, from all sides, and how it is dealt with, might be, just perhaps might be because we are talking about a civilised liberal democratic society that respects personal conscience and values human life?

Why the constant barrage of Israel bashing? Is it really that necessary for you to have a hate object in your lives?

Otherwise why the pretence that you really give a stuff about Palestinians, or anything else about this issue for that matter?

Let me tell you something true. It is very obvious you don't. Fine. Most people don't. But why the compulsion to pretend that you do?

Well hello there Geoff! Going at it like the proverbial bull at a gate as usual I see.

What is it with you guys? When you've lost an argument why is it impossible for you to just concede the point…

Wasn’t actually aware I was having one; rather simply pointing out that – as opposed to your strident assertions – there were individuals in the IDF refusing to carry out orders.

Instead of just getting abusive and cheap. Very cheap.

Don’t believe I was abusive in that non argument either Geoff.

Why the constant barrage of Israel bashing? Is it really that necessary for you to have a hate object in your lives?

I’d dearly love you point out my history of “Israel bashing”. I’d dearly love for you to demonstrate my “hate” of Israel in what I have written. It must be readily apparent, I suppose, for you to described Israel as a “hate object” in my life. Can’t ever recall stating that I hated Israel but, whatever stokes the fires of you single-minded fascination.

Did you ever stop for one moment to consider – beyond the demonstration of “a civilised liberal democratic society that respects personal conscience and values” – just what this refusal to carry out orders might indicate? That there might just be direct questioning of the purpose and morality behind some of the actions of the IDF?

Bye Geoff. I’ll just go outside in this nice winter sunshine and work on my hatred.

Geoff, I've replied to your nonsense over t'other side.

Like the Padre, I'm going out into the winter sunshine; only, for me, I think my apathy towards the Palestinians needs a bit more honing.

Nice to see Geoff that, as usual, you singularly fail to address the point(s).

Head stuffed with cold, I shall go back to working on my demonstrated hate object.

I had several last night in fact. An attempt to kill it: feed a fever and guzzle a cold (Black).

Didn't work though - turned me into an Israel hater, gave me a temperature and an unseemly hankering for greasy Kentucky fried chicken for some reason...

Aw f-u-c-k, now he's impugning Melbourne's weather. Time for Tonkin's blue pencil now, for sure.

Mike, I believe the folk remedy goes: Feed a fever, starve a hatred, suck more piss.

Works for me.

The debate descends into what one does or does not know of winter sunshine?? The neighbour hung the washing out this morning and my winter sunshine has become London sunshine: rain.

I like the sound of that folk remedy. Might possibly dip into a black - a decent beer - this afternoon. That is, of course, unless the one-trick Pahoff disagrees. Then I shall simply dip into a few more.

Oh deary me. WD has chosen to censure a critical part of my latest post oh the King David Hotel bombing.

Oh well never mind.

I'll just repost it in full here where no doubt it will reach about 66% of those how would read it anyway

"But your response, as we've seen, was to make a tasteless joke out of the atrocity"

If there was a gold medal up for grabs in Beijing for Smug Sanctimoniousness then all eyes from Jacob's "homeland" would be glued on Jacob as their best ever contender.

The nature and role of humour is a huge subject in its self and worth a thread on its own. But for now, The bloody King bloody David Hotel again.

Here goes [sigh] :

The bombing apparently was a watershed event in wresting Palestine from its British colonial masters to its present happy state.

Ignoring the typically snide tone of this comment I would agree that indeed the bombing arguably did tip the balance and led to the British finally abandoning Palestine. But not because of the bombing itself. It would be absurd to argue that the British could be stampeded out of anywhere by one bomb. Rather it was the aftermath. Allow me to explain.

In the immediate aftermath, the British army commander in Palestine, General Sir Evelyn Barker issued this order:

"All Jewish places of entertainment, cafes, restaurants, shops and private dwellings" be "out of bounds to all ranks". He concluded: "I appreciate that these measures will inflict some hardship on the troops, but I am certain that if my reasons are fully explained to them, they will understand their propriety and they will be punishing the Jews in the way the race dislikes as much as any by striking at their pockets and showing our contempt for them."

The order was immediately picked up by Irgun Intelligence and naturally publicly released around the world. Bearing in mind this was 1946, and the crematoria had bearly cooled, such naked antisemitism caused world wide outrage.

This was not the only piece of British heavy footed clumsiness. They had earlier raided , from memory, Jewish Agency headquarters and seized secret documents including records of Jewish agents in Arab country. They rounded up and imprisoned illegal Jewish immigrants , including children, in their concentration camps in Cyprus along other Jewish refugees who had earlier been left to rot.

This does not justify the bombing of course. But it does explain why the British had lost all moral justification for continuing the occupation in public opinion globally.

On the other hand all this might have had no influence in what many see was inevitable anyway. At the time there was an Anglo-American agreement on Palestine about to br reached. We know now that after the bombing Atlee secretly wrote to Truman saying:

"I am sure you will agree that the inhuman crime committed in Jerusalem on 22 July calls for the strongest action against terrorism but having regard to the sufferings of the innocent Jewish victims of Nazism this should not deter us from introducing a policy designed to bring peace to Palestine with the least possible delay."

That's enough on the significance of the attack, which I would argue has been overrated, at least as far as its impact on wresting control of the land from the British Imperialists.

There is much else that must be said about the King David Hotel attack. Seeing that the bloody thing has been raised yet again, let's do it properly. But I've run out of time for now so it'll have to wait for later.

Oh by the way, I nearly forgot. Here's one just for Jacob.

Question: Why did the King David Hotel terminate its free shuttle service from the airport soon after the war?

Answer: It was no longer necessary. The Hotel went to the airport to meet its guests.

BTW clarification of question needed

"Did you ever stop for one moment to consider – beyond the demonstration of “a civilised liberal democratic society that respects personal conscience and values” – just what this refusal to carry out orders might indicate? That there might just be direct questioning of the purpose and morality behind some of the actions of the IDF?"

Which particular refusal to carry out orders did you have in mind, Father?

The refusal to serve in the occupied territories?

Or the refusal to dismantle Jewish settlements in the occupied territories?

Both call themselves "Refusniks".Both are passionate and are acting according to their consciences

Oh goody, we're getting the approved version of the KDHB.

We had chicken tonight, which I was assured was 'free range'. I looked at it spinning on the rotisserie in its little birthday suit and thought, not anymore it ain't. But was delicious with a definite free range flavour, free-ranging among an assortment of roast and steamed free-range vegies. Not the elaborate work of art Father Park is lovingly preparing, but yummo all the same.

And good to hear from you Caz. Just realised I've been meaning to reply to your e. Do hope the ankle's much better now.

Oh deary deary me.

Actually I had already linked Jacob's blog in a nfp post I sent to WD moderators in an attempt to convince that he was probably "joking" about my impugning whatever. Well I mean "joking" in a .. well you know .. "Dutch"
sort of way.

I can understand WD's scepticism though about Jacob "joking". Because, as we all know, Jacob has absoulutely no sense of humour whatsoever. Nor any concept of what it is. He was hiding in a cave on Mars with his fingers in his ears and his eyes shut tight when God was handing out senses of humour.

So apparently was Avent.
