Seeing that pic Jacob, reminds me
of the many lambs on the spit I had when I was a KID( YEAH.. PUN INTENDED)
Seriously though, they were to die for.
My Grandfather would sit there basting the lamb and turning the spit with beer in hand.
He was a vigneron and used to make his own wine too. Though it was rocket fuel compared to the wines that are now produced.
Yes.. (Kath reminices. sigh...)Grandfather would sit there all afternoon, lovingly tending the spit, then when it was close to being done he would carve a little piece from the lamb to taste it.
Mmmmm I can almost taste that lamb now.
Gosh it was wonderful Jacob!
Best way to have it.
And ,, well,, I think there is something just so earthy and primeval about it.
Certainly used to have family and friends enraptured!
Setting sun. Glowing coals. The aroma of lamb wafting through the air..
Ahhhh, now I'm waffling..
Hey Jacob do they have goats on a spit, I wonder.
Anyhow thanks for the memories mate!
Did you notice how happy the students look?
It's not like they went out an wrestled the goat to the ground with their bare hands, before skinning and gutting it.
A chunk of dead meat sure made them smile though.
I prefer my meat to no longer resemble its original form.
Ahh well Caz then you have never had a lamb(pig is good too) on a spit.
Truly mate... You don't know what you are missing out on!!
There is nothing more succulent and sweet than a lamb on a spit!
Heaps better than a lamb roast , even...
You know Caz, tis no different to having a whole chicken or turkey.. Or dare I say DUCK!
Guess it is just what you are used too!!
"I prefer my meat to no longer resemble its original form."
Yes, sausages, franks, patties, cross-sections ('steak'), and similar presentation processes and techniques all help to make meat more palatable. Removing feet/toes also make drumsticks look less like a body part as one chows down.
But, following Kathy's line of thought, there's nothing that makes one feel more human than the act of sinking the teeth into something that looks identifiably like a fellow sentient creature.
Apparently there are many people, particularly kids, for whom the idea that things like steak, snags and burgers originate from flesh-and-blood near-relatives NEVER OCCURS TO THEM. The quadruped roasting on the spit has the virtue of being an honest presentation.
